A new cracking resistance index based on fracture mechanics for high strength sheet metal ranking

Abstract Driven by current safety and weight reduction policies in the automotive sector, development of new high strength sheet metal products has experienced unprecedented growth last years. With emergence these materials, challenges related to their limited ductility higher cracking susceptibility have also raised. Accordingly, fracture criteria accounting for material’s resistance become unavoidable. In this work, a index (CRI) based on mechanics is proposed classify crack propagation (i.e. toughness) sheets. The energy obtained from tensile tests with sharp-notched specimens. procedure very fast simple, comparable conventional test, it may be used as routine testing quality control material selection. CRI investigated several advanced steel (AHSS) sheets 0.8-1.6 mm thickness strengths between 800 1800 MPa. results show that suitable rank according can correlated crashworthiness edge resistance.
